Olivia Pita-Sllim
PhD student in seismology at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.
I like studying earthquakes, dancing and taking photos.
I am currently doing my Ph.D. at Victoria University of Wellington. I analyze data from permanent and temporal stations located on the Alpine Fault in the South Island. The focus of my Ph.D. is applying machine learning tools to seismic signals. I do a lot of fieldwork, mostly around the Alpine Fault, so I have a lot of opportunities for taking landscape photos and doing astrophotography.
I am originally from México and lived mostly there until February 2020 when I came to New Zealand to do an MSc in Geophysics. During my second week in New Zealand, I left Wellington and traveled to the South Island to do fieldwork. We serviced seismic stations and for some, it was only possible to get there by helicopter. As if the scenery from the ground wasn't already amazing, what I saw flying in the helicopter was unbelievable. At that moment I realized that I could not do more of those fieldwork trips and do not have an appropiate camera to capture such beauty.
